Peliculas y Mas

I wasn't feeling too hot this weekend, so I watched a few movies. First, Crash was fantastic. I cried when the little girl ran to her dad to protect him from getting shot. Then Prozac Nation was o.k. I liked the acting, but thought it ended feeling like an ad for the pharmaceutical companies. Still, Christina Ricci is hot (or so says Colby). Gunner Palace was boring. I thought there was going to be some soldiers bad-mouthing Donald Rumsfeld and maybe we might see some major combat, but the first 45 minutes was just some boring soldiers hanging out in a bombed-out palace. Maybe the good stuff came later, but I stopped watching it. Then there is THX-1138 - the first movie by George Lucas. It was really cool. I especially liked the futuristic, nonsensical digital displays. But by far the best thing I watched on DVD this weekend was the 3rd season of Dave Chappell. Oh my god, he did not just say that! The gay Ku Klux Klan dude was the best.

hmm. you really thought crash was fantastic? okay, so yes it was powerful, defintiley shed some tears and made "feel" something. but i thought the big race movie of the year had some serious anti-immigrant sentiments. specifically with the persian shop owner and asian smugglers. the black, white and latino were vindicated, while the immigrants were seen as confused, out to get money and angry. i saw this movie when it first came out in the theaters, so maybe i need to see it again. anyway, i wish that we could have a silly discussion on it over a beer at lovejoys, but oh well.

I probably thought it was fantastic because of the acting and how it was more realistic than other movies of similar popularity. I definitely see the problems with the movie the more I've thought about it. I didn't really understand the Persian shop owner character. Why was he so angry and confused? It didn't make sense, unless perhaps it was just a reflection of a stereotype.

I should note that I saw the 2nd Season of Dave Chappell, not the 3rd. I'm not sure there ever was a 3rd.

Also, I miss lovejoys. Maybe we can go in December, cause I may be in Austin for a few days. For my San Francisco friends, Lovejoys is a favorite bar of mine in Austin, not the Noe Valley tearoom with the same name.

yeah there was never a 3rd season of chappelles show. apparently dave chappelle went crazy and checked himself into a mental health facility in south africa. on his return he decided not to do the show. :-(

yeah we can go to lovejoys when you come down. after the smoking ban went into effect no one went there anymore, i think it brought their business down a lot. but the other day i went and there were a few people smoking and it didnt seem like they cared. oh well i'm sure it doesnt effect you since you dont smoke.
