A Quarter of Americans Want to Open the Borders to All Immigrants

According to a New York Times/CBS News Poll. The poll was mostly disappointing from an immigrant rights standpoints with the press using the result to promote the horrible compromise Senate bill on immigration.

Most disappointing to me was this: "Seventy percent of those polled said recent illegal immigrants tend to weaken the United States economy by using public services without paying corresponding taxes." Of course this is not supported by evidence, but the right-wingers have made that lie stick somehow.

Most encouraging was this: "a quarter of respondents saying the United States should open its borders to all immigrants." That's a sizable base to work with for all those trying to organize the immigrant rights movement and fight off the Minutemen. What's most incredible about this statistic is that I doubt a single representative in Washington would agree.

Mr. Villarreal,

I'm amazed that you want completely open borders and are encouraged by the 25% figure. Why is it wrong for the other 75% of us to insist that people need to wait for permission to enter the country and live here?

Mexico's immigration laws and land ownership laws are much more restrictive than ours, so why not simply match their policies?

(I am a mix of Latino, Italian, European, and Native American, btw)

First, I am not a proponent of Mexican law. But I do think we should be moving toward open borders simply because I believe in liberty. That sounds lame, I know, but I just don't think there should be restrictions on people who live in Nuevo Laredo that keep them from moving and settling a few hundred meters away in Laredo.

With that said, there may be practical reasons why we can't open the borders over night, and I'm open to debate on that question. But beyond that I'd ask you, "why do you think you have the right to force other human beings to wait and get permission before settling within the U.S. borders?"
